Centre of Excellence for Agriculture Research at Hooghly
A centre of excellence for agriculture research at Chinsurah in Hooghly was announced by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on May 19, 2015. The project will be implemented in association with Israel.
The research centre will be set up at Adi Saptagram in Hooghly, where the government is running a kisan mandi for farmers to directly sell their produce. Around six hectares of land has been allotted for the project.
Speaking at a government programme in Chinsurah, the Chief Minister said, "The government has also allotted five acres of land for an agricultural college in Chinsurah and options are being explored to set up an agriculture university in the area on the lines of the one in Kalyani." Claiming that the state has received a proposal to set up a food park in the area, she said, "We are conducting a survey for the park."
"We have also requested the Centre to revive the jute industry here by procuring more jute. As the Centre was not procuring jute for a long time, the structure here has collapsed," she added.
